When Photography Matters

The following is a guest post by Tali Krakowsky, Founder of experience design studio Apologue. We asked Tali to give us her thoughts about how imagery affects her and her work.

This might seem like a strange statement, but I really believe that a deeper, communal sense of empathy could change the world.

Empathy, which involves an understanding of the emotional states of others, derives from the Greek word for physical affection or passion. Empathy appeals to our deep, fundamental need to create emotional connection to each other and build a sense of community.

With the exception of the particularly malicious, I generally observe that people do good when they feel empathy towards someone or something.

Tony Pasma

It’s difficult, however, to empathize with the digital ink that describes suffering in distant countries. It’s equally difficult to empathize with the scientific data that desperately cries for the state of our environment. It’s challenging to empathize with the story of a spectacular land far away, described in a book of words. Even more complex to design in your head a piece of architecture from description or get a sense for its detailing with the naked eye. It’s even strange to empathize with the most recent victim of gossip whose story is whispered in your ear. Without an emotional connection, it is hard for us humans to feel passion and affection for things that we have not directly experienced or are not directly connected to.

Justin Molloy

This often changes when we see a photograph. Photos humanize, attract, surprise, connect, make the unknown known and the unreal very real. They allow us to actually see something through someone else’s eyes in what could possibly be the most direct way to evoke empathy. Photos can take common data in the world and magnify, distort, reveal or hide it just enough to catch our attention and find beauty.

JK

If we could take a moment to stop looking at photos as stock and background images and, instead, think about them as an opportunity to sit right behind someone else’s pupil and discover something new about something in the world, we might be able to feel a greater sense of empathy. That empathy, in turn, could help us care and do something slightly or substantially significant in the world.

Changing Design + Photography

So, are you guys, like, a stock photography site?" We get asked this question a lot when we talk about HotShoo.

"Well, no," we say, "We're so much more than that". And indeed HotShoo is so much more than just another place to buy photos on the Web. Yes, the genesis of the idea was to solve the designers need for great high resolution photography, but we needed images of the built environment, the world around us. We needed these images to demonstrate elements of the look and feel of a project before we had anything designed; we wanted to show how materials worked together; how the light that pours from a beautifully lit storefront at dusk can capture a truly romantic place in time. Those moments and instances needed to be explained, and the perfect way to communicate them was through imagery.

Herein lied the problem. Other sites on the Web are full of great photography, but pictures of a young woman hanging laundry, or a dashing go-getter in an office cubicle were not the images we were after. We needed images that communicated a true sense of place, inspired us and our collaborators, and led the client to say, "YES! I get it!" Hours and days were dedicated to image searches. Sure, we'd find our images eventually, but there were problems. First and foremost, we didn't have the rights to the images, and couldn’t buy the rights in most cases, which meant that we couldn't let our clients use them for marketing brochures, Web sites, etc. Oftentimes, we had no idea who the photographer was, because we just happened to get lucky on the Web that day. Secondly, we'd find great shots, but the resolution was so small that we couldn't print them at the sizes we needed for a boardroom presentation (big, bold images = big, bold impact). Lastly, many a good image was ruined by the "thumbs up" pose by some random dude in the background, or by Uncle Bob sitting there and smiling, umbrella drink in hand.

Enter HotShoo, the definitive place to find design inspiration and reference imagery on the web. High resolution photography, shot with a designers eye, without Uncle Bob. And if you want the photos you've been browsing, they're available for download at a price a lot less than you think, at a resolution a lot higher than you're used to. With a clear and targeted search engine, an unmatched library of design images that will keep you happy and inspired, featured postings on our favorite images and the world in design, and a user community (that's you) who ultimately drive the content of the site through constant, one-of-a-kind communication, HotShoo is destined to become so much more than just another stock site.

John has been shooting photography for almost 30 years and it shows. Glance through his library of images on the 'Shoo and you'll instantly see why we're so excited to have him on-board. Whatever you're looking for; beautiful single family homes both in and out, gorgeous shots of the natural world around us, or artfully done images that perhaps inspire you in a new direction - John has them all. Be sure to check his profile often as his collection is always expanding.

A few words from John himself:

A picture is supposed to be worth a thousand words right? Not anymore. It's more like 10,000 words. In our hectic world people don't have time to read beyond the headlines. It's the images we create that must do the heavy lifting of grabbing attention, conveying emotion, and illustrating life to create action. I take great care to create high impact images because no other selling tool is more powerful. And that is what I deliver to my clients—images that help you sell. I bring you nearly 30 years of photographic talent, experience and a reputation for working quick, smart and on budget. And I am passionate about delivering imagery that works

Nate, our OH (or Original HotShooter for the uninformed), has been through the ringer and back to bring you some amazing images from all over North America. You want images of New Orleans? He took those. How about the urban decay of NYC or the new projects popping up there. Yeah, he's shot those as well. You want Bogota, Columbia you say? Well, you get the idea....  Over the course of his legendary 30 day tour of the America's, Nate has arguably set the bar for the content found on HotShoo. Stop by his profile and check out his work. He's updating daily, so be sure to visit often and catch what's new.

A few words from Nate;

I am what you get when you mix a small town, art school attending, sheep farming boy from Washington State with a lot of world travel; a passionate creative, with an eye for current cultures and trends. After working with design and development teams on projects across the globe, I have been able to absorb both new and relevant architecture, urban design, photography, and art scenes. These are passions which I carry directly into my work. With this, my foundational principal is that good design is nice to have, but the real impact comes from clear, educated, progressive and environmentally responsible moves in each facet of it. A graduate of The University of Washington, and resident of Seattle for more than twelve years, I moved to Denver in late 2006 to take on the role of Director of Design for Alberta Development Partners where I oversaw the design and development of over one billion dollars in mixed-use projects. In early 2009, Nathan Jenkins Studio was started. Currently, I am an active participant in the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAAP), the Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED, AP), the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), and the American Institute (AIA) of Architects Colorado and volunteer for several local and national charities.
